Most life insurance claims are paid, fact!

Having insurance to protect your family against the loss of life, or a critical illness, can provide peace of mind for many people.

The trouble is, many more people are sceptical. A recent survey undertaken by Aviva, one of the largest insurance providers in the UK, found that just 47% of UK adults thought that insurers will pay out when this sort of policy is claimed against. Almost 9 in 10 people surveyed thought that insurers will try and avoid paying out.

The fact is, this is not true.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) and Group Risk Development (GRD) published their latest claims statistics for the whole protection insurance industry in July 2016. These show that insurers paid out more than £5bn in the last year to help people through difficult times. Overall, 97% of group and individual protection claims are paid – and the small percentage of unpaid claims are usually due to either the claim being for a condition not covered by the policy or the customer not disclosing important information when taking out the policy.

The ABI states that only 1.9% of life insurance policies were not paid out – so life insurance is doing its job and providing vital support to families by relieving the financial strain following a death.

The other point that these statistics highlight is the importance of carefully checking that correct health and lifestyle information is provided during the application process and that you fully understand the policy terms and what they cover.

This is where we can help you. We’ll go through the application process with you thoroughly, helping to ensure that questions are understood and that information provided is clearly documented and passed through to the insurer. We can be your guide, to help minimise the chance of misunderstanding and error.
